Do essays make a difference?
- YES!!! Although the importance of the essay varies widely from
college to college.
What is the purpose of the essay?
- The essays make the facts in the folder come alive. It is an OPPORTUNITY
for you to "talk" directly to a college's admissions committee and to help them
"see" you as a thinking and feeling person, rather than simply a set of
impersonal statistics.
- To help the admissions committee judge YOUR writing
skills, to test YOUR thought process, and to judge YOUR
ability to organize and present material.
What is the right answer to an essay
question?
- There is no right or wrong answer, just be honest! Remember, it is
not what you say that will count most in the admissions office, it's how well you say it.
Do all colleges require an essay?
- No, however, some colleges may want as many as one essay or three
essays or eight essays in order to learn more about what you are like and how well you
write.
What makes a good impression?
- Enthusiasm, intelligence, talent, leadership, maturity, writing
ability, creativity, and perseverance - All are high up on the list, but no one expects to
find them wrapped up in one person. In fact, the biggest pitfalls for applicants are
50-cent words and promises of perfection.
- Colleges are looking for clarity of expression, creativity, the
willingness to question and think for oneself and the ability to reach beyond the
superficial level and grapple the larger issues.
- An essay should reveal WHAT and HOW you think about
such things as your academic activities, personal interests, experiences or
background.
